Car Seat Education & Installation

Car Seat Checks & Installation Help in Naperville & DuPage County

Feel Confident Using Your Child’s Car Seat

Car seats can be confusing.

Between installation methods, harness adjustments, recline angles, inserts, weight limits, LATCH, seat belts, and a manual that sometimes feels like it was written in another language, it’s understandable to have questions.

Prairie Path Birth Collective offers one-on-one car seat checks and education with a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) for families throughout Naperville, Warrenville, and surrounding DuPage County communities.

Rather than simply installing your car seat for you, we’ll work together so you understand how to correctly install, adjust, and use your child’s seat yourself.

Because the goal isn’t just to leave with an installed car seat.

It’s to leave knowing how to use it confidently every day.

1. We’ll Review Your Car Seat & Vehicle

We’ll look at your child’s car seat, your vehicle, where the seat is currently positioned, and any questions or concerns you have.

We’ll also review the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant vehicle information.

2. We’ll Check Your Current Installation

If your seat is already installed, we’ll review how it is currently set up and talk through any adjustments that may be needed.

Don’t worry about making it “perfect” before your appointment.

That’s why we’re meeting.

3. We’ll Install the Seat Together

We’ll work through the installation process so you understand how your specific car seat works in your specific vehicle.

Depending on the seat and vehicle, we’ll talk about appropriate installation methods and help you understand the difference between using the vehicle seat belt and lower anchors.

4. We’ll Check Harness Fit

A correctly installed seat is only part of the picture.

We’ll review harness positioning and fit, how to adjust the harness as your child grows, and common things that can interfere with a safe fit.

5. You’ll Practice

Before we’re finished, you’ll have the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned.

The goal is for you to feel confident installing and using your child’s car seat after your appointment—not to depend on someone else to do it for you.

Car Seat Help for Expecting Parents

Getting ready to bring your baby home?

A prenatal car seat check can help you feel confident that you understand your infant seat before you’re trying to buckle a tiny newborn into it for the first time.

We can talk about:

  • Installing your infant car seat and base
  • Seat belt versus lower-anchor installation
  • Appropriate recline
  • Harness positioning and fit
  • Newborn positioning
  • Manufacturer-approved inserts and accessories
  • Aftermarket products

Ideally, schedule your prenatal car seat appointment a few weeks before your due date so you have plenty of time to practice and make any necessary adjustments.

Car Seat Checks Aren’t Just for Newborns

Babies grow—and eventually their car seat needs change, too.

Car seat education is available for families navigating:

  • Infant car seats
  • Rear-facing convertible seats
  • Forward-facing harnessed seats
  • Booster seats
  • Moving between stages
  • Harness adjustments
  • Installing a seat in a new vehicle

Miranda Yde, Child Passenger Safety Technician with Prairie Path Birth

Car seat services are provided by Miranda Yde, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).

CPSTs are trained to help caregivers learn how to correctly select, install, and use child restraints while following manufacturer instructions and current child passenger safety best practices.

Our approach is educational rather than simply doing the installation for you.

We want you to leave knowing not only that your seat is installed correctly, but why—and how to recreate it yourself.

You don’t need to install your infant seat months in advance, but it’s a good idea to become familiar with it before your due date.

Scheduling a car seat check several weeks before baby is expected gives you time to learn how the seat works, practice installation, and address any questions before the trip home from the hospital.

We’ll install the car seat with you, rather than simply doing it for you.

A major part of a CPST appointment is caregiver education. You’ll learn how your seat works, how to install it appropriately in your vehicle, and how to check your own installation so you can confidently use the seat after our appointment.

It depends on your car seat and vehicle.

One method is not automatically safer simply because it uses lower anchors. We’ll review the instructions for your particular car seat and vehicle and discuss which approved installation options work for your situation.

The safest position can depend on your vehicle, car seat, other passengers, and where you can achieve an appropriate installation.

Rather than assuming one seating position is always best, we’ll look at your specific vehicle and family’s needs.

When possible, having your child present can be helpful because it allows us to check harness fit and positioning.

For expecting parents, we’ll focus on preparing the seat for baby’s arrival and teaching you how to make appropriate adjustments once your baby is here.

Yes. If you have multiple children, multiple seats, or more than one vehicle, let us know when scheduling so we can make sure enough time is reserved for your appointment.

A Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) is specially trained in child passenger safety and car seat education.

CPSTs work with caregivers to help them understand how to choose, install, and correctly use child restraints based on the child, car seat, vehicle, and manufacturer instructions.
